Meet The Team

Bobby Newton’s journey in public safety began as a Volunteer Firefighter and has since evolved into a remarkable career serving the Cape Girardeau community. After joining the Scott County Sheriff’s Department as a Communications Officer, Bobby graduated from the Southeast Missouri State University Law Enforcement Academy in 2014. His service has spanned multiple roles: from Patrol to six impactful years in the Narcotics Division, and now in Public Information and Community Affairs.
As a co-founder of the SEMO Peer Support Team, Bobby is deeply committed to mental wellness and peer support for fellow first responders, helping to build a network of support for those who protect and serve.

With over 30 years in law enforcement—27 of those in narcotics—Mike “Alf” Alford has shown incredible dedication to keeping our communities safe. In 2018, he was shot in the line of duty while apprehending a fugitive, a stark reminder of the risks our first responders face every day.
Beyond his bravery, Mike has been a passionate advocate for mental health, dedicating countless hours to helping fellow officers understand the importance of mental wellness in their roles. His work has truly made a difference, showing that strength also comes from within.

Dr. Shannon Cubria Farris, widely known as “Dr. Shannon,” is a pioneering mental health advocate, celebrated for his innovative contributions and unwavering dedication. A Missouri native, Dr. Shannnon’s career as a clinical psychologist, educator, and crisis intervention specialist has transformed mental health care and education at local, state, and national levels.
Currently, Dr. Shannon serves as a co-responder with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, leading one of the most rural crisis response programs in the country. He bridges law enforcement and mental health support, effectively diverting individuals in crisis away from jails and emergency rooms.

Shawna Schmitt has dedicated over 30 years to protecting her community, starting with the N.B.C. Fire Protection District as a cadet in 1993 and rising to Chief and EMT. Since 1997, she’s also served full-time with the North Scott County Ambulance District, where she currently holds the position of Crew Chief/EMT. Adding to her experience, Shawna served as a dispatcher for Scott County 911 from 1996 to 2001.
Shawna’s dedication to public safety and experience make her an invaluable asset to our team.

Crystal Barker, a dedicated spouse of a law enforcement officer for over 30 years, has devoted her life to supporting the law enforcement community and their families. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by first responder families, she founded Beyond the Badge, a group aimed at fostering resilience, connection, and understanding within the law enforcement community. Crystal’s unwavering commitment to advocacy and support continues to inspire others to bridge the gap between duty and family life

Dan King, a 911 Telecommunicator, Paramedic, Firefighter, Hazmat Specialist, and EMS Instructor. With a wealth of skills and experience across multiple agencies in Southeast and North Central Missouri, Dan has dedicated his career to serving and protecting our community in countless ways.
From emergency medical services to fire response and hazardous material management, Dan’s expertise and commitment make him an invaluable asset.

Lyza Koesterer’s dedication to service is evident in every role she takes on. As a Communications Officer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department and an Army Veteran, she continues to make a positive impact both on and off duty. Lyza serves as an Executive Board member of the Perryville American Legion Post 133, Beyond the Badge family support, and the Southeast Missouri Peer Support Group.
She’s also part of the Honor Guard for the American Legion Post 133 and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Perryville. On top of all this, Lyza is a Personal Trainer and Entrepreneur, bringing her passion and leadership into everything she does.
